Chicken Invaders is a series of shoot 'em up video games, developed by InterAction studios and released for Microsoft Windows, OS X, Linux, iOS, Windows Phone, and Android platforms. There are six games in the series.
The main theme of the game is a battle between a lone combat spacecraft and a technologically advanced race of space-faring chickens, who are intent on subjugating (and later destroying) Earth. The games make heavy use of humor, especially in the form of parodies of Galaxian, Star Wars, Space Invaders and Star Trek.
Chicken Invaders (1999)[edit]
Chicken Invaders is the first game in the series. It is both a single player and two-player game. The player takes control of a lone spacecraft, and must protect Earth from swarms of invading chickens. The game features weapon power-ups that resemble gift boxes, and the player can use these to upgrade their weapons. Chickens drop eggs which must be avoided, otherwise the player will die if they collide with these projectiles. Chicken drumsticks fall from the chickens when they're killed, and if the player collects enough of these they earn a missile. These missiles can then be used to wipe out everything (except the player) on the screen. The game also features infinite levels. In each level, there are 10 waves, and at the end of every level is a boss, which must be defeated in order to advance (or warp) to a new system. The gameplay is endless, so there is no ending to the game; it continues on and on, until the player has finally lost all of their lives and the game is over. The difficulty increases each time players advance to a new chapter; the enemies move or fall faster, and objects like asteroids move faster, too. There are no holiday editions of this game; this is the only game that has no Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, or Halloween Editions made for it. This is also the only game in the series that hasn't been ported to other platforms. It is only for Microsoft Windows.[1]
Chicken Invaders: The Next Wave (2002)[edit]
Chicken Invaders: The Next Wave (or Chicken Invaders 2) is the second game in the series and the first game to have an ending. It has 110 Waves in 11 Chapters and 3 different weapons. It can be played by one or two players. The player takes command of the same lone spacecraft of the previous and must eliminate the chicken infestation of the solar system. The game features eleven chapters, moving inwards from Pluto, each of which consists of 10 waves of attacking hostiles. In all the waves, chickens attack by dropping eggs which have to be dodged. The player can collect different items that help them in the game. Primary weapons may be changed by collecting parcels. Power-ups may also be collected to upgrade the primary weapon. Weapons may be upgraded up to eleven levels. The eleventh level, however, is only acquired by collecting ten power-ups. The player may collect and accumulate drumsticks and roasts to get missiles, powerful weapons that can wipe out an entire wave. In all levels, except in the asteroid belt level, the ninth wave has a bonus (usually a new weapon, or extra firepower) awarded for not using missiles throughout the level, while the last wave features a boss. This game also comes out with an Remastered Edition and a Christmas Edition in for the original and Remastered.[2]
Chicken Invaders: Revenge of the Yolk (2006)[edit]
Chicken Invaders: Revenge of the Yolk (or Chicken Invaders 3) is the third game in the series, released in 2006. It is similar to the second version (with up to 4 player cooperative play). It has 120 waves, in 10 levels across 12 systems in the galaxy. There are 30 bonuses. Weapons have 11 power levels, and a secret 12th level, which can only be reached by acquiring an additional 10 powerups after the 10th level powerup (the 20th). There are also seven unlockables which are unlocked after repeatedly completing the entire game. The game also has in a Christmas Edition and an Easter Edition.[3]
Chicken Invaders: Ultimate Omelette (2010)[edit]
Chicken Invaders: Ultimate Omelette (or Chicken Invaders 4) is the fourth game in the series, released in 2010. It has 120 waves across 12 chapters. It includes weapons which can be upgraded through 11 power levels, plus a secret 12th. 3 of the 4 new weapons from Revenge of the Yolk are available as 'unlockables'. Ultimate Omelette unlockables can be purchased individually by collecting keys, which are dropped from destroyed enemies during the course of the game. Key-dropping enemies develop a gold halo and must be killed quickly. A new feature in this game is the capability of the player's spaceship to face in any direction depending on the level (it was always facing 'up' in previous games), and the camera can also zoom in or out depending on the wave (boss fights typically have the camera zoomed out to contain all the action). The game also comes in a Christmas Edition, an Easter Edition and a Thanksgiving Edition, which was released in 2013.[4]
Chicken Invaders: Cluck of the Dark Side (2014)[edit]
Chicken Invaders: Cluck of the Dark Side (or Chicken Invaders 5) is the fifth game and is very similar to the previous ones. On 26 July 2014, InterAction studios announced that the beta team for this game was opened, and that they were now accepting applications. This meant if anyone was interested, they could fill in and submit their applications to this company. In October of that year, InterAction reviewed the applications and selected participants. On 20 October 2014, InterAction announced that the first beta team would be finalized within a week. Four days later, the first beta team was finalized, and InterAction stated that the second and third (final) beta teams would be finalized. The beta version was only made for Microsoft Windows PCs, and not for Linux or OS X. On 22 November 2014, Chicken Invaders 5: Cluck of the Dark Side was released. The game is for Microsoft Windows, OS X, Linux, iOS, Android, and Windows Phone. The game also has a Halloween Edition and Christmas Edition.[5]
Chicken Invaders Universe (2018)[edit]
Chicken Invaders Universe is the sixth game in the series, released on December 14, 2018 in Early Access. It is a spin-off, in which players, as recruits fresh out of the Heroes Academy, join the ranks of the United Hero Force to fight against the fowl Henpire. On July 14, 2018, InterAction studios released the first teaser for the game.[6] On August 14, 2018, the official website for the game was created.[7]
Reception[edit]
CNET gave 4 out of 5 stars to the first Chicken Invaders game, highlighting the graphics and sound but criticizing the game's lack of features, and for the gameplay being repetitive.[8] CNET also gave The Next Wave 4 stars, again praising the graphics, but criticizing the lack of a windowed mode.[9]The Next Wave was rated 'mediocre' by GameSpot, criticising the repetitive gameplay and indistinct enemy bullets. However, the colorful, cartoony graphics where highlighted, as were 'flashes of understanding of what makes a good shooter'.[10]
Shortly after Ultimate Omelette's release, it was included in Adrenaline Vault's 'Top Casual PC Games of 2010' list.[11] The reviewer described it as 'the most fun arcade space shooter in a very, very long time'. The original orchestral soundtrack was also praised as rousing, invigorating, and 'simply the absolute best'.[12]
Gamezebo gave the fourth game, Ultimate Omellete, a 4 out of 5 stars, saying that[13] 'Chicken Invaders 4 is fantastic for a first-timer to the series', but criticizing that 'for veterans of the games, it will feel a little too samey. The action has improved somewhat over the course of the series, but it’s still really the same ideas and premise that ran through the other games. Hence, those who are not new to the games may feel that paying full price for this latest release is a little too much.'

Shooter fans will likely garner some amusement from Chicken Invaders: The Next Wave, but they won't want to pay full price for it. It's a legitimate distraction that wears pretty thin pretty quickly, and there just isn't a compelling enough product here to really make it worth your time.

Chicken Invaders puts you at the forefront of a battle against invading intergalactic chickens, bent on revenge against the human race for our oppression of Earth chickens. In this episode, the chickens have hatched a devious plan to block out sunlight and freeze Earth to death. It’s up to you to travel around the galaxy in order to piece together an ancient artifact and (quite literally) save the day.Hero’s log, Stardate 8008.5

Chicken Invaders Review
- Review by Brandon
Chicken Invaders is a strange new twist on the classic Space Invaders style arcade game. Chickens are invading Earth and it's your job to pilot a spaceship to take them out and save the world. You'll take on increasingly difficult waves of chickens and asteroids that threaten to destroy Earth. You can face the task alone or play with a friend. Goofy graphics and sounds add an interesting touch to the good arcade gameplay.
Straight Up Arcade Shooter
The gameplay at the heart of Chicken Invaders is very similar to other arcade shooters. You control a spaceship at the bottom of the screen that can be moved left or right. The enemies sit at the top of the screen, and its your job to eliminate them. However, you'll have to be quick and alert to dodge the eggs they drop. If you get hit by an egg, you lose one of your three lives. When destroyed, the chickens drop a drumstick you can collect for bonus points, or a present that will award you powerups and points. You repeat your actions on wave after wave until you finally lose all three lives and the game ends.
Asteroids, Chickens, and Eggs
There are ten different waves you face in Chicken Invaders. Some waves have you destroying the chicken invaders (who are organized in different formations throughout), while others have you dodging deadly asteroids heading straight for you. The final wave contains a single large chicken invader, and is the boss encounter. Once you complete the ten waves, they start over from the beginning and become more difficult than before. There will be more chickens to eliminate, and more asteroids or eggs to dodge as you progress. You cannot adjust or change the difficulty settings in Chicken Invaders.
Simple Controls
Similar to the gameplay, the controls are fairly simple. The spaceship you control is moved left or right with the left and right arrow keys (or the A and D keys). You fire with the Shift key, and shoot missiles with the Control key. The controls are given to you before you begin the game, and simple enough for anyone to learn or use. One downside when it comes to the controls is the inability to change them. It would have been nice to change the controls to something easier or more comfortable to use. Another problem with the controls is needing to hit Shift repeatedly to fire. It becomes tiring and repetitive to have to hit the same key over and over.
The visuals of Chicken Invaders is hardly cutting-edge, but is on par with other games in the same genre. They also add a somewhat humorous or goofy element to the game. The portrayal of the enemy as chickens and the dropped drumsticks when they are destroyed keep the game a lighthearted affair. The various simple sounds effects also play their part in bringing that feeling to the game, although they may get annoying after hearing them enough times.
Repetitive By Nature
The biggest issue with Chicken Invaders is the repetitive nature of the game. There are only three types of enemies/obstacles in the game (chicken invaders, asteroids, and bosses) that you deal with time and again. Additionally, the same ten waves repeat over and over as you progress in the game, only change in their difficulty. How to use an external hd in the mac as backup. Having to repeatedly hit the Shift key to continuously fire only adds to the repetitiveness of the game. Playing with a friend (each of you controlling one ship) or working towards new high scores to upload can help offset the monotony, and people really into arcade shooters may not be bothered by the repetitive elements found in many such games.
Conclusion - It All Depends On How Much You Like Frying Chickens Over and Over..
Overall, Chicken Invaders is a decent game with its positive and negative aspects. There's solid arcade gameplay at the core, but the lack of options and repetitive nature may put off some players. The options to play with a friend and upload high scores are nice additions to the game. If you like arcade shooter games, you may find this very fun and addictive. Even if you don't, there's no reason not to at least give the game a try, especially since it's free.

If you re looking for a space-shooter game with a dose of humor, turn to Chicken Invaders. True to its name, this program is similar to Space Invaders, only you must blast chickens instead of aliens and avoid eggs instead of missiles. Other than that twist, gameplay is rather standard for this type of program, although the chickens fly in different formations as you go deeper into the game. We liked both the graphics and the music, but we would have appreciated the ability to turn the latter down or disable it entirely. While we re on the subject, a lack of features is Chicken Invaders weakest point; you won t find a single option for customizing the game other than the ability to set the detail level. Still, since it is free and fun to play, we think a wide range of users will appreciate decimating their fowl foes in this game.
